And So It Begins

December 16th, 2009 Chris and I made a huge change in our lives. We bought a house. It is 2400sq feet of quirkiness. When we first toured the house in November, I was not sold on it. There were mirrors in almost every room. I am not talking about a mirror hanging on the wall, I am talking about floor to ceiling mirrors. Here are the pictures that I took when we were first going through the house, so you can get an idea of what we were undertaking. (Overlook all the pictures of the fish, we were a little obsessed with them.) Chris and Kat fell in love with the house and, eventually, so did I. There are oddities that just appeal to us.

So, now we have been homeowners for 5 days. In those five days we have made a good start on some of the changes we wanted to make. Chris took down the mirrors in the kitchen with the help of a hammer and then later with some help from our friend Jeff. We have painted the kitchen a nice pale green and have picked out the colors that the rest of the house will eventually be painted. Chris painted the formica counter tops in the kitchen a sage green, so we are no longer haunted by the harvest gold counters. Next to go will be the mural in the formal dining room. Shocking, I know.

Today was the first real downer of being a homeowner. The sewer backed up and the garage door broke. Both are covered under our home warranty, but it was frustrating and an ordeal all day long. Luckily, Chris had it all in hand. The Roto-Rooter man came out with his cool camera and super long snaky-thing and fixed us right up. The garage door repairman came and that is temporarily repaired. More extensive repairs will happen once we are able to talk to the seller. So far, he has managed to dodge our calls. Not a good sign.

I decided that since this was our first and hopefully last time buying a house I would chronicle the experience. Blogging seemed like a good idea. I have a lot of photos that I will be posting later, I haven't unpacked enough to find my card reader.

We have been enjoying the renovations so far, it has brought back fond memories of when we were first married and living in the garage apartment at Tim and Jayne's and living through the renovations there. It's hard to remember what the house looked like before they got their hands on it. I can only hope that we will be as successful in our endeavor.
